Slow down..to speed up!

"Only habits endure"..Og Mandino

Several years ago at a National Sales Meeting, a speaker came to do a special 'sales leadership' breakout session.  He gave us ideas, and inspired us with new ways of thinking about and approaching others with a high integrity leadership style.  There were many 'buzz phrases' in the session, and one that I specifically remember and use today is: slow down to speed up!

At first, 'slowing down' didn't make sense to me in the fast paced world of sales and client service.  Our sales leadership team created a culture that 'urgency is everything.' But I thought more about what the value is in slowing down:

1 - Have a plan A, B, C - In sales, business, and life, things do not always go as planned.  Having an alternative plan, and better yet, thinking of it in advance can save time, energy, and resources later.

2 - Take 'think time' - I heard this from Keith Cunningham (another famous speaker/author) as he emphasized the important of taking daily time (he recommends an hour but any time is better than no time!) to think.  I find a great time and place to do this is in my car.  Turn off the XM or radio and it's a great time and place to reflect on and resolve any challenges or issues you are facing.

3 - Take a 24 hour time out - When dealing with difficult people, situations, conflict, or events, instead of responding quickly, give it 24 hours.  'When emotions run high, intelligence runs low,' I once heard.  If the situation is emotionally charged, it's always better to have a live conversation (even by phone) vs. a text or email; language can be easily misunderstood!

4 - Schedule, plan, and take your time off - If time off and vacation is scheduled, it happens!  There is never a good time to take time off work or other commitments, but it is necessary!  I just took 9 days off myself, and made a commitment to take a break every quarter this year.  Life is too short to be a workaholic!

5 - Just say NO - 'When I say NO what am I saying YES to?'  I once had a coach share this idea with me when I was overcommitted.  Instead of worrying about pleasing others, focus on your needs and well being.  Once of my favorite phrases is 'let me check my calendar' before I make commitments this year.  I learned that lesson the hard way by saying too many YESES fast, and then later realizing I had double booked myself.  It takes more time, energy, and effort to decommit after you say YES!
